Market Square

Market Square 1987

Market Square 1987

The heart of Newburyport.  However, I did not know many locals who actually hung out at Market Square.  It seemed more for tourists as they sat down and enjoyed ice cream from Bergson’s.   That is Bergson Ice Cream.  Not to worry the Thirsty Whale was just across the street from Bergson’s.

The fire station in market square was a big attraction during the xmas season when I was a kid(mid 50s to early 60s), because it always had the best lights and decorations. Of course, there was Bossy Gillis’ gas station next door, and a few doors down a candlepin bowling alley where you set up your own pins!

Dugin Supply was managed by my grandfather, Clinton A Whitney, Sr. for 40 plus years. I only visited Newburyport as a child, but I always considered it my hometown. Hello to my family there!

Anyone remember when the Daily News was on Inn St? Remember when you could drive down Inn St? It’s Merrimac St., not actually Market Sq., but remember C&D Oil, Leon & Teddy’s gas station across from Hymans Shoe store, Diamond National lumber yard, Chetsas TV, Volpone Motors ?
