My favorite Yankee Homecoming event was the Art Show at the county court house at the Mall. Back in the early sixties, there was never a croud there. It had a quiet dignity that is lacking in the hooplah, carnival atmosphere that is today’s Homecoming…

How ’bout Newburyport Art Association on Water Street. I took painting lessons there all through junior high school and high school from the great Audrey Bechler, I think for like $25 for six lessons. Even in the mid-’70s, a good price! My mother still has watercolors I did of the Chain Bridge and the (then newly renovated) Inn Street Mall that I did on those classes.

Piel Craftsmen was, as I recall, on the corner of High St. at North Atkinson St. Had a sign with a model sailing ship on it.

Random Memory Quotes

“A funny memory was when Richard would have one of his “barbeques” . He’d make us burgers and hotdogs and corn on the cob from one of the local farmstands he traded with . He was the only guy I know that could eat corn on the cob and finish with corn kernals on his glasses and in his hair . We’d all get a chuckle .”
